What Holds You Back?
When it comes to working out and eating properly, what is it that holds you back from being consistent? We know that exercising and staying fit is important for our health, but why is it that most people decide that it’s ok to ‘take a break’ for months at a time and indulging in a lifestyle that sets them back?
Here are 3 of the most common reasons why we hold ourselves back:
1 – THE GLAMOURIZATION OF BEING BUSY
It seems as though being busy is a badge of honour with people posting their jam-packed schedule on social media as if it is something to be proud of. I’ll let you in on a secret… being busy doesn’t mean you are being productive. If you were to analyze your week hour by hour, you would be shocked at how much time you waste on tv and social media, on things you don’t want to be doing and on things that aren’t priorities.
The Fix – make a list of your major priorities in life.
If one of those items is to be healthy and able to fully experience your present and your future, exercise and proper nutrition better be on your daily schedule. ~Free up some time in your day by cutting out mindless television and trying to keep up with celebrities on social media.
~You don’t have to say yes to every get-together, every practice/game, every overtime shift… By slowing down and really taking an honest inventory of your time, you will feel less stress, you will be more present and your health will improve. You will notice that there are time slots in your schedule for an hour of fitness and cooking meals to keep you and your family healthy.
2 – BORING GYMS / DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START
It is very easy to get sucked into the treadmill factory at a Globo gym, watching TV, or gossiping with someone you don’t really know. It is also quite intimidating to walk into a gym that offers little guidance when you are a beginner and don’t know what you are doing.
The Fix – find your tribe.
Do physical activities you love. It is shown that people with a support group are more likely to stick with it and work harder and have way more fun doing it! Think about an activity you love and sign up for it. Ask a friend or colleague about a gym/fitness activity that they participate in and join! If you aren’t doing something that makes you feel good and gets you excited, you won’t stick with it, it’s proven. It’s SCIENCE.
3 – NO ACCOUNTABILITY / SUPPORT
It’s easy to quit when you only make a pact with yourself. Globo gyms count on you paying your dues and never showing up, how’s that for motivation? Also, lack of support from family and friends can be detrimental to your progress.
The Fix – see above!
Finding a network of like-minded individuals to keep you accountable and to lean on when you really need help sticking with it. You are who you hang out with, your friends’ habits become yours. It is very hard to keep healthy habits when negative dialogue consumes your daily life. People who aren’t living a healthy life will criticize you for being ‘obsessed’ or ‘too muscular’ or ‘too skinny’. But they aren’t in your network of healthy and supportive friends so why does their opinion count?? Start to analyze whose opinions matter and why. The rest is just noise.
